We Have Power We Must Use

A couple of years ago I did a radio interview for the University of Colorado student radio station. We talked about energy, petrochemicals and manufacturing in the USA. In the middle of the interview the host totally shutdown and said, “Did you hear what he just said dear friends?” I thought, “Whoa, where are we going now.” The host then said, “We don’t like wells and petrochemical plants but we like our cars, cell phones, skis and climbing ropes. If we are going to have these things, doesn’t it make sense that they be made here under US environmental law and provide jobs for Americans.” I thought, “Wow, he got it!”

The young host understood the link between oil and gas, hydraulic fracturing, petrochemicals, the products we use every day and manufacturing jobs. He also understood the basic truth, we have no control of what China does to the environment and its impacts on us. Chinese CO2 emissions are continuing to increase up 2.6% again in 2019. Chinese emissions have not yet peaked.

US CO2 emissions were down 2.9% in 2019. Overall US CO2 is down 14%. According to IEA the United States is the only major country that is meeting the Paris Treaty targets even though the US is not part of the treaty. Most adults who claim to be environmentalists and environmental groups don’t understand this or don’t care. They should. If climate change really is the problem some claim it is, unless China and other countries stop increasing emissions our cuts won’t make much difference. The fires in California have been blamed on climate change by some. If that is true unless we can fix China the fires will continue.

China and the rest of the world aren’t subject to US law. We have no power over them. We do have control of our decisions as individuals and as a nation. My radio host at the University of Colorado figured that out. He understood manufacturing in the USA meant less products would be made in China and other places having little or no environmental controls like we do.

Increasing petrochemical production and manufacturing in the USA can lower global emissions. Those that like to call this “cancer valley” and try to prevent petrochemical development here are hurting the planet and increasing CO2 emissions. Plants built in the USA and the Shale Crescent USA will be the cleanest and most efficient in the world. If they can’t be built here they will be built somewhere else, possibility China, where they will be far more polluting and contribute more to climate change. In addition to taking jobs from the USA.

Expansions and petrochemical plants built in the Shale Crescent USA have another environmental advantage. Building on top of the feedstock and in the middle of one of the largest economies on the planet has a lower CO2 footprint. China and other countries must get their energy from OPEC, Russia or the USA. After manufacturing products, they are shipped around the world with many being shipped to the USA. All of that transportation creates a carbon footprint that is eliminated when a company locates here.

Forget politics, personalities and political parties for a minute and look just look at science and engineering. We heard on the debate stage last spring many of the presidential candidates wanted to ban fracking, eliminate fossil fuels and move to wind and solar. These same candidates all promised thousands of “green jobs”. The best green jobs are in manufacturing windmills and solar panels. Manufacturing requires feed stocks and energy. Those come from oil and natural gas. Windmills, solar panels and electric cars all require petrochemicals in their manufacture.

Shale Crescent USA working with government data has seen a direct correlation between increasing oil and gas production and increasing manufacturing jobs. We also saw the loss of manufacturing jobs when we were dependent on OPEC for our oil and natural gas. US manufacturing jobs peaked around 1980 at 19.4 million jobs and fell to 11.5 million during the energy crisis of the early 2000s. Since the Shale revolution the USA is the leading oil and gas producer in the world. We have gained 1.4 million new manufacturing jobs and the number is growing.

Renewables like wind and solar can produce only one product, electricity, and they can’t do that 24 hours a day. They require a backup energy source, typically natural gas. Basic engineering tells us renewables can’t create manufacturing jobs without oil and natural gas. Renewables can’t produce a chemical to make a product or a prescription drug. A fracking ban eliminates feedstock from the USA since every well is fracked, making the world dependent on Russia or OPEC for feedstock. With the USA, out of the oil and gas business, OPEC and Russia take control. Feedstock prices and the price we pay for everyday products will soar. Current renewable and other US manufacturing will move to China because we could no longer compete.

We know what it is like when OPEC and Russia have control of our energy supply. We know what it is like when we are dependent on China for our PPE and other critical products. We don’t need to go back there. Because of our abundant natural gas and oil resources we can control our own destiny. We can now manufacture in the USA and especially Shale Crescent USA, cheaper than anywhere in the world. We are creating high wage manufacturing jobs. We can manufacture our own PPE and other essential products to protect our people.

Manufacturing in the USA rather than other countries makes the world cleaner and reduces emissions. People want good jobs. The USA has abundant economical energy, advanced manufacturing, skilled labor, abundant water and a huge market to sell into. Our elected leaders and those running for office must understand this. We have to tell them and vote accordingly.
