West Virginia Governor’s Energy Summit

  October/November 2018 / Vol 8 Issue 7
West Virginia Governor’s Energy Summit

The West Virginia Office of Energy sponsored the Annual Governor’s Energy Summit in early October.  The event was held at the Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, West Virginia over a three- day period from October 9th thru October 11th and featured many of the region’s energy leaders.

Headlined the “Energy Innovation: Powering a Nation,” panel discussion topics included energy efficiency programs/policies, promoting the shale region, renewable energy, alternative fuel transportation, generating electricity from natural gas, and other innovative related subjects.

Many speakers delivered presentations throughout the two-day conference.  One of the highlights were remarks made by West Virginia Governor Jim Justice before lunch on the second day of the conference.

Governor Justice stated 38,000 jobs in West Virginia can be attributed to natural gas development.  Horizontal drilling has created limitless opportunities for state residents.  No one would have imagined this forty years ago.

Governor Justice said issues around the Mountain Valley Pipeline will be resolved and the state’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is engaged in making this project happen.

Both United States Senators, Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito, addressed attendees with prepared messages delivered via video conference.  They expressed strong support for continued energy development across the state.

Some interesting statistics about West Virginia learned from the conference include:

  • West Virginia is the eight-largest natural gas-producing state in the nation, largely due to shale gas production
  • Recent drilling in the Marcellus Shale of West Virginia has discovered liquid hydrocarbons, including crude oil and natural gas liquids.
  • West Virginia has two compressed natural gas fueling stations, 64 electric vehicle charging stations (200 outlets), 29 ethanol stations with 22 of those offering ethanol blends of E15 and E85 and 10 propane fueling stations

By sponsoring this annual conference, the state of West Virginia continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to the oil and natural gas industry.
